How We Moved an Airport Terminal's IT to the Cloud for GDPR

TIA Private Terminal had to meet GDPR. Here is how Techi moved its whole infrastructure to Hetzner, put file sharing and the domain controller in a clustered cloud, and added the security the move needed.

Where We Started

TIA Private Terminal runs the VIP terminal at Tirana International Airport “Mother Teresa”. It opened in 2022, and Techi has looked after its IT since the first day.

We built the network, servers and security in the head office and in the terminal where passengers pass, and we support them every day. For the first years, everything ran on the company's own servers.

Why GDPR Meant Moving

A private terminal handles passenger details every day: check-in, passport control and bookings. Under GDPR the company has to know where that data is stored, who can reach it, and that it is protected and can be recovered.

The company decided to be GDPR compliant, and the clearest way there was to move the whole infrastructure to a cloud built for it, with stronger security around it.

What We Moved to Hetzner

We moved the whole infrastructure to Hetzner. Two parts matter most for daily work:

File sharing now runs in the cloud, so staff reach their files the same way from the office and the terminal, with access set per person.

The domain controller, which decides who can log in and to what, also runs in the cloud.

Both run in clusters: if one server fails, another takes over and the company keeps working. Around them we added security measures, so access to the data is controlled.

Moving Without Stopping the Terminal

A terminal cannot close for an IT project. As in every migration we run, we first listed every system and what depends on it, tested the new setup, and then moved one part at a time, outside the busiest hours, with a way back for each step.

Staff were told in advance what would change and when.

More Than the Migration

Together with Alpine Edge, we also set up the tools a GDPR-ready company needs every day:

Internal chat, so work conversations stay inside the company. An omnichannel system that brings customer messages into one place. A password manager, so passwords are not shared in notes or messages. MDM for Android devices, so a lost phone can be locked or wiped from a distance.

If You Need to Meet GDPR

Start with three questions: where is your data stored, who can reach it, and could you get it back after a failure? If any answer is unclear, that is where to begin.
